Argentina football legend Diego Armando Maradona is back in the headlines. After one of the former strikers' jerseys worn during the 1986 FIFA World Cup had been sold for 8.5 million euros, setting a record for sports memorabilia, his 1986 Golden Ball trophy from the Mexico tournament will be sold at an auction of the French auction house Aguttes on June 6. Experts expect bids of several million. An auction house speaker called the auction a "unique opportunity for the potential buyer." The courted item went missing under unknown circumstances for decades and reappeared only months ago. In late 2022 the "Hand of God" ball achieved 2.2 million euros at an auction. After having passed away at the age of 60 in November 2022, the circumstances of the 1986 World Champion's death remained mysterious and were subject to speculations and legal proceedings. Maradona's years in the Napoli shirt and his performance at World Cup's made him one of football's icons. The Argentine legend is regarded as one of football history's best. |
